Lessons from the gorge

On Sunday, myself and some of my clients went on a gorge walk ( part of this years residential training weekend )
When I was planning on putting this into the weekend, I’d checked it out a few times, and thought it wouldn’t be too challenging
However……
As we started it, what I thought we were going to do, and what we were about to do, we’re 2 completely different things
Basically, we were kind of doing a rock climb, over and around boulders, while going through waterfalls
As we started it, one of the women described herself as being ‘terrified’
As we made our ascent up the gorge, it became more challenging
Just before the end of it, we had 2 vertical climbs to get to the top. Even I almost had a moment for a minute.
It was scary
There was such relief once we got to the top. We were actually almost 300ft higher from where we started
But here’s the thing
If we had discussed what we were going to do, at the start of it, we wouldn’t have done it
If we’d have looked at it, and seen the height of what we were about to climb, we wouldn’t have done it
But what we did, was to focus on one tiny area at a time. Get over that, and then focus on the next tiny area
The same process can be used for our other goals
Initially, we can look at something and say “I’ll never be able to do that” or “I’ll never get that”
But, if we actually break it down, and focus on one tiny piece at a time, achieve that, and then move into to the next piece
Then all of a sudden, we get closer to our goal
And during the journey, our momentum and confidence grows
But if we never actually take those first steps, we’ll never move forward
And we’ll end up staying where we are, while everyone else who takes action, moves forward
Is that what you want?
