A couple of weeks ago, the government brought out the ‘sugar tax’ ( not sure on the date )
This has been introduced to raise awareness on all sugary drinks
In some respects, that’s good
However
People need to be very wary of other things that they may eat and drink
Jaimie Oliver was on the news the other day, saying that sugar tax should be added to milky drinks, and he’s right
Years ago, every now and again, I used to buy a carton of milky drink, then when I noticed the amount of sugar in them, I stopped
You’d be surprised at the amount of sugar, that can be found in foods and drinks
The other week, I mentioned how a client bought some slim fast, thinking she was doing good, until I pointed out the amount of sugar in it per serving
20grams would you believe
Even the other day, I bought some rice cakes that were topped with yoghurt
When I looked at the packaging, each rice cake had 5grams of sugar. I’d had 4 of them
It’s suggested that we should no more than 30 grams of added sugar per day ( not including sugar from fruits, veg etc )
If you feel you need to cut down on sugar, here’s some tips:
• instead of sugary, fizzy drinks and juice drinks, go for water or unsweetened fruit juice (remember to dilute fruit juices for children to further reduce the sugar)
• if you take sugar in hot drinks or add it to cereal, gradually reduce the amount until you can cut it out altogether
• check nutrition labels to help you pick the foods with less added sugar, or go for the low-sugar version
• choose tins of fruit in juice, rather than syrup
• choose wholegrain breakfast cereals, but not those coated with sugar or honey
