20 Years in Business

Around about this time of year, I always remind myself that I’ve been in business for so long. Well today, has special significance, as its 20 years to the day since I started out in business as a Personal Fitness Trainer.
I also remind myself about the attitudes that I was up against at the time, “personal fitness training, who the hell is going to that around here? It might work in Hollywood but it won’t work around here”
It was very very hard starting out, but my persistence took me to some amazing places, people and things, gaining a lot of publicity in local media as well as building up a fully booked week of clients. When I look back on that, I’m always proud of how I built it up because I know how hard it was, and to have done something like that at such a young age was pretty amazing
When the Internet came on the scene, my marketing strategies fell behind, and I really suffered. I still continued to go out and do work for local media and talks with business communities etc,but people were beginning to search for things in a new way. One of the things I still continue to do today, is post flyers through people’s doors. This is how I started off. If you have the right flier, then you will get a response doing this.
Over the past couple of years, my marketing skills have been brought up to date, and my classes and business as a whole is beginning to grow again which is exciting.
In 20 years, the fitness industry has massively changed and now more and more people are becoming conscious of how important it is to become fitter and healthier.
I’m also proud of the fact that every now and again, people will say to my parents “hey, I remember you’re Paul starting out as a personal trainer. He was the first to do it ”
Maybe now, after all this time, my persistence is about to pay off, or at least I hope so, as I have a great vision for the near future.
Whatever you are working towards, persistence and brutal determination, really are the 2 main components. These can be challenged every now and again, and when they, you really have to step up, and therefore your persistence and determination muscles will get stronger
Who knows where I’ll be in another 20 years, but today, is a day for reflection and being grateful for all the experience I have and what I have achieved
Paul 🙂
